What I treat

Different site, same problem.

Wherever it shows up, the cause is usually the same: not enough capacity for what you're asking of it.

Mawson Lakes, specifically

The lake circuit, and the Technology Park.

Mawson Lakes was built from scratch between 1998 and 2011, and it shows in the best way: it is one of the few Adelaide suburbs genuinely designed around walking.

Sir Douglas Mawson Lake is a seven-hectare recreation lake with a path around it, and together with the wetlands it makes the suburb unusually easy to exercise in. That is a good thing and it is also the source of most of what I see from here. A flat, pleasant, well-lit loop is exactly the kind of route where people add distance faster than their tissue adapts to it.

The result is predictable: Achilles pain worst in the first ten steps of the morning, shin pain arriving at the same point every run, or a knee that starts talking at a set distance. Almost none of it is damage. It is loading outpacing adaptation, and it responds to progressive loading rather than rest, which is the opposite of what most people are told.

Technology Park Adelaide is the other half. Sixty-five hectares, running since 1982, with more than a hundred organisations in defence, aerospace, electronics and ICT. That is a lot of people doing highly sedentary, highly focused desk work.

Long static hours followed by a hard session is the most reliable way I know to end up with a back or neck that keeps flaring. Not because sitting is dangerous, but because sitting builds nothing, and then the weekend asks for something that was never built.

The UniSA campus adds students and staff to the same mix.

Mawson Lakes is one of the further trips to me, so most people come because they want a specific approach rather than the nearest clinic. That is usually the right reason.
